By Emily Maldonado, Salesian Cooperator

The following is a witness talk that Emily Maldonado, a Salesian Cooperator from the Port Chester center, gave at the Salesian Cooperators Interamerica Formation Congress in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Two moments truly touched me today. The first moment was when I walked through the Holy Doors. It was an honor to step through them, especially since we are in the Jubilee Year of Hope. That experience reminded me to trust God fully, to let Him guide me, and to allow myself to be His instrument in service. It strengthened my desire to continue serving young people with faith and joy.

The second moment was during our time at the oratory. The difference between life here and in the U.S. is striking. Being with the children reminded me how important it is to teach my kids back home gratitude for all they have. Many of the children here may have very little in terms of material things. Yet the joy that shone through their smiles, laughter, and energy was contagious. Even in the excitement and chaos, it was beautiful to see how happy they were to welcome visitors from around the world.

Being there also made me think of my youth group back home. I sent them a picture and asked them to pray for these children. Some of these children reminded me so much of my own, and I realized how much I miss them.

At first, I felt overwhelmed when the kids crowded around me, especially since they are high schoolers, and it was difficult to communicate with them. But today I see how much I’ve grown—what once felt overwhelming now came naturally. That growth itself is a blessing from God. This experience also reminded me of the reality of burnout. At times, serving and teaching can feel draining, and it takes real strength to keep going. My mom’s words often echo in my mind: “How can you love others if you don’t love yourself?”

As a Salesian Cooperator, I’ve learned that I need to pause, reset, and refocus on Christ. When I find that steadiness in Him, I can return to service with renewed strength and joy. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit this oratory and to witness the spirit of the Salesian family here. Every gathering reminds me of how large and united our family truly is, and how deeply we share the same mission of love and service.

Finally, I feel blessed in the vocation I have chosen. As an educator, teaching elementary students back home, I know I am not alone. With Don Bosco’s inspiration and the help of Christ, I feel their presence guiding me in the classroom. This experience has renewed my commitment to serve with joy, patience, and hope.
