Fr. Dominic Danh Cong Tran, SDB, Appointed Provincial of the SUE Province

(New Rochelle, NY – June 22) – On June 13, 2023, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, with the consent of the General Council, appointed Fr. Dominic Danh Cong Tran, SDB, provincial of the Salesian Province of St. Philip the Apostle, (SUE).

Fr. Dominic was born on July 14, 1969, in Da Lat, Vietnam. He grew up close to the Salesians and regularly attended the Salesian parish and festive Oratory. He entered the initial formation program with the Salesians of Don Bosco in Da Lat. After he emigrated with his family to the United States in 1992, he continued as a candidate in South Orange, NJ, in 1993. He was a novice in Rosemead, California and made his religious profession on August 15, 1995, in Bellflower, CA. He was ordained a priest on May 24, 2003, by Bishop Raymond Goedert, auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, in Our Lady of the Valley Church, Orange, New Jersey. Fr. Dominic has a BA in English from Seton Hall University, a MA in Theology and MDiv from the Immaculate Conception Seminary, Seton Hall University, and a MA in Spiritual Theology from Creighton University. As a Salesian priest, Fr. Dominic has served in various roles, including coordinator of youth ministry and teacher at Salesian High School, province vocations director, director of the Salesian community in Orange, vice-provincial, and province delegate for formation.

In his roles as province vocation director and vice-provincial, Fr. Dominic has traveled throughout the province, visiting the Salesian presences and personally coming to know the reality of the province.

On behalf of all the confreres, Fr. Tim Zak expresses profound gratitude to Fr. Dominic accepting this role of leadership. In the letter of appointment, the Rector Major offers his fraternal congratulations, praying for an abundance of divine grace come upon Fr. Dominic and the province. We echo the Rector Major’s sentiments, and pledge our support, prayers and cooperation to Fr. Dominic.

Fr. Dominic is grateful to all for their support and encouragement. He asks for prayers from the members of the province and the Salesian Family as he begins this ministry.

On Saturday, August 12, in New Rochelle, Fr. Hugo Orozco, General Councilor for the Interamerica Region, will preside at the more formal ceremony celebrating the appointment of Fr. Dominic as provincial. Mass will be held at 10:30 am ET in the Salesian High School Chapel, lunch to follow Mass in the Cassin Commons. More details will be sent out in early July.
