East Boston: The Club Cares for Creation

(East Boston, MA – October 1) – Welcome, October! It will not be long before the Christmas season arrives.

Saturday marks the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Everyone is familiar with the statues, fountains, and bird baths featured with St. Francis and an array of birds and animals. Every year, the Boston Franciscan Friars celebrate the feast honoring their founder with the “Blessing of the Animals” ceremony on the Boston Common, which served as the main pasture for animals starting in the colonial period. It is believed the friars have blessed animals on the Boston Common since they arrived in the city.

This time of the year is a suitable time to honor and pray for Mother Nature. In my weekly orientation lessons and often in my Good Night talks with the Salesian Boys and Girls Club members, I speak about honoring and respecting “Mother Earth” in all her beauty. We have had interesting discussions about taking care of what we have and protecting the home of all living creatures. For the past few weeks, the youngsters have been working on a poster dedicated to our practice of being a welcoming home. They included Mother Nature in it.
