(Chicago, IL – February 4) – St. John Bosco-St. James Parish’s annual Salesian retreat brought together an inspiring group of 338 parish leaders, which included catechists, group leaders, volunteers, and staff, in a vibrant gathering dedicated to spiritual growth and pastoral planning.
This year’s retreat centered around the Salesian Strenna 2026 theme, “Do whatever he tells you,” and encouraged all participants to deepen their commitment to Christ and service within the parish community.
A highlight of the retreat was the unveiling of the parish’s SEPP 2025-2028 pastoral plan, which sets a clear direction for the coming years and reinforces the parish’s shared mission. Samantha Polo’s heartfelt presentation, “The Vision for a Spiritually Renewed Parish,” served as a reminder of Cardinal Cupich’s “The Call to Renew My Church,” which inspired attendees to embrace a future filled with hope, compassion, and spiritual vitality.
In recognition of the importance of holistic well-being, the retreat featured a well-received mental health session, which affirmed the parish’s commitment to caring for every dimension of its members’ lives. Multilingual presentations in Spanish, Polish, and English underscored the parish’s rich multicultural witness, fostered unity among diverse backgrounds, and celebrated the strength found in differences. Additionally, youth participation added energy and promise. It highlighted the ongoing engagement of the next generation in parish life.
As the retreat concluded with a moving holy hour of adoration, the presence of St. John Bosco’s spirit was felt throughout, reminding everyone of the joy, love, and unity that define the Chicago community’s journey together.
The annual Salesian retreat exemplifies the power of coming together as one parish family, renewing our faith and vision for a spiritually vibrant, inclusive, and united community.
