Canadian Federation of Past Pupils

Canadian Federation of Past Pupils

A tapestry of cultures and traditions, united in the spirituality of Don Bosco

By Bill Bernardo

The National Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils in Canada has officially been established, marking a historic milestone for the Salesian Family in the country. In a virtual ceremony, the provincial, Fr. Dominic Tran, SDB, administered the oath of office to the newly elected national officers.

Canada does not have any Don Bosco schools directly administered by the Salesians. Yet the country is home to a vibrant and diverse community of alumni—immigrants from India, Hong Kong, the Philippines, El Salvador, the United Kingdom, and many other nations. Despite differences in culture, language, and tradition, these past pupils share one profound bond: they were all formed by the spirituality of St. John Bosco and shaped by his Preventive System of education.

The Seed of a National Federation

The idea of forming a Canadian National Federation began to take root in October 2023, when Bill Bernardo, a past pupil from the Philippines, and his wife Roselyn attended the Salesian Festival in Ramsey, NJ, upon the invitation of Fr. Tom Dunne, SDB, and Sr. Denise Sickinger, FMA. There, he met Bro. Dominic Nam Nguyen, SDB, the world delegate for alumni, who encouraged him to consider establishing a national organization in Canada. Bro. Dominic emphasized that a united federation of past pupils could become a powerful presence within the Salesian Family.

This inspiration led to a series of discussions and discernment. By August 2025, a core group—Paul Mok, Rey Padilla, Bob Velasco, Caesar Forteza, and Bill Bernardo—began meeting regularly with Bro. Dominic Nam Nguyen, SDB, and Bryan Magro, president of the World Confederation of Don Bosco Past Pupils. Together, they explored the mission, structure, and potential impact of a national federation.

A Vision Realized

In December 2025, after months of collaboration, the group finalized and approved the Federation’s statutes and held its first national elections. Special recognition is owed to Bro. Dominic Nam Nguyen, SDB, and Bryan Magro, whose guidance and unwavering support were instrumental in bringing the Federation to life.

The newly formed National Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils of Canada now serves as the umbrella organization for all local chapters and informal alumni groups across the country. As they begin their mission of unity and service, the officers entrust their work to Mary Help of Christians and humbly ask for the prayers of the Salesian Family and friends.
