SLM Discernment Weekend

SLM Discernment Weekend April 2025

By Mr. Adam Rudin, SLM Program Director

(New Rochelle, NY – April 23) – During the weekend of April 11-14, young adults gathered in Port Chester, NY, for a Salesian Lay Missioner (SLM) discernment weekend. The weekend served as a time of prayer, reflection, and community building designed to help participants discern whether they are being called to serve as an SLM.

The weekend opened with a welcome and introduction to the Salesian charism. Participants were invited to reflect on the joyful, faith-filled service exemplified by St. John Bosco. Through prayer, presentations, and shared experiences, they explored what it means to live out the Gospel in solidarity with the young and the poor.

Saturday’s schedule featured sessions on vocational discernment, the mission and life of an SLM, and the core elements of Salesian ministry. A special highlight was the presence of four returned SLMs, who offered powerful testimonies about their own calls to mission and the transformative experiences they lived while serving in communities around the world. Their stories provided participants with honest insight, encouragement, and a tangible sense of what it means to live as an SLM.

The weekend concluded with Mass, reflection, and a prayerful sending forth. Throughout it all, participants were invited to listen deeply to God’s voice and consider how they might be called to serve.

Please continue to keep these young adults in your prayers as they discern their call to mission.
