MARYLAND: NHL’S STANLEY CUP “AWARDED” TO DBCR

(Takoma Park, Md. – December 11) – The Stanley Cup, named for Lord Stanley of Preston, one-time governor general of Canada, is professional sports’ oldest trophy, dating back to 1892 and since 1926 awarded to the winner of the National Hockey League’s championship. The 2017-2018 champs are the Washington Capitals.

Mr. and Mrs. Raul Fernandez, part owners of the Caps and longtime benefactors of Don Bosco Cristo Rey, arranged for the Cup to pay a short visit to the school on December 11. Each class in turn, the staff, and some alumni and family members had a chance to see the Cup “up close and personally”—touching it, embracing it, perhaps kissing it (I didn’t actually witness that), and of course taking selfies or being photographed with it. The only restriction apparently was against lifting it from the display table.

Students and staff were encouraged to wear Capitals regalia or some shade of red to celebrate the Cup’s presence and our local team’s championship season. They did so enthusiastically
