East Boston: Spring Has Sprung

East Boston 03.27.25

By Bro. Bob Metell, SDB

(East Boston, MA – March 26) – East Boston, where we have experienced mild weather. Well, maybe not, with some in the forecast this week!

Because of the beautiful weather we have had recently, we were able to let the youngsters use the new playing fields and playground area to the fullest. I even joined in the outdoor fun and played soccer, one of my favorite sports. The field area consists of one large soccer field and several smaller fields used for practice and games. In that same location, there are also a picnic area, a basketball court, and a playground with swings and various climbing activity areas. A separate section is dedicated to a community garden, where the youngsters can plant flowers. Boston Scores, one of our partner organizations, also uses the fields for their soccer league games and practices.

Last week, we honored St. Patrick and St. Joseph. This week we honor the Annunciation of our Lord. It is only fitting that we honor St. Joseph and Mary a few days apart in the same month.

Mary and Joseph are the pillars of Don Bosco’s Oratory and the Salesian Family. They both had their own private calling experience, and they both said yes despite doubt, fear, and hardships along the way. All three “Saints of March”—Mary, Joseph, and Patrick—are models of faith for us; they inspire within us a sense of hope that we can make a positive impact in the lives of the young people who come to us.
