East Boston: Club Offers Ongoing Education Programs

East Boston Club Programs

By Bro. Bob Metell, SDB

(East Boston, MA – February 18) – Don Bosco said, “The Oratory is the school that prepares for life.” Boys and Girls Clubs of America have various programs and activities that fall in line with Don Bosco’s thinking.

At the Salesian Boys and Girls Club in East Boston, we offer a wide range of educational programs. One example is our homework help program. Every day, Fr. Rich Putnam opens the homework help center located at the Club in the Boston Scores conference room.

Maria and Joyce, our arts and crafts instructors, plan creative art projects for the Club members. Theresa conducts the cooking classes one day a week for various age groups. Last week, she did the cooking class with the angels group (made up of five to eight-year-olds).

Another component of our ongoing educational programs is our implementation of the centerpiece of Boys and Girls Clubs of America: “A Positive Place to Grow.” In a future feature article, I will provide a brief history of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, which got their humble start during Don Bosco's lifetime, in the 1860s in Hartford, CT. Our orientation faith time and Good Nights are key to our moral and leadership development activities.
