World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Grandparents Day

(New Rochelle, NY – July 20) – This Sunday, July 24, marks the second annual World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. Established by Pope Francis in January 2021, this observance coincides with the feasts of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Our Lady's parents and Jesus' grandparents, on Tuesday, July 26.

As we approach Sunday, the SUE province would like to honor and acknowledge our beloved elder confreres and all grandparents, both spiritual and familiar, in the Salesian Family.

Here are two quotes from two of our senior confreres in Ramsey:

"Life is like tennis. You can’t win unless you serve."

- Fr. John Blanco, SDB

"Basically, the senior confrere brings the gifts of pastoral experience and long standing community relationships to the life of the pastoral and religious community. Without the burden of administrative responsibilities, the senior confrere has the opportunity to be present to the Salesian Family educative community in a spirit of affirmation, enrichment, deepening, and freedom. With the benefit of knowledge and experience, the senior confrere can come to recognize and share the foundational truths, virtues, and practices that are at the root of our lives as consecrated religious within Don Bosco’s Salesian Family."

- Fr. Tom Dunne, SDB
