SLM Discernment Weekend

SLM Discernment Weekend June 2025

By Mr. Adam Rudin, SLM Program Director

(New Rochelle, NY – July 2) – From Saturday, June 21, through Monday, June 23, eight Salesian Lay Missioner (SLM) candidates gathered at the Salesian community in Port Chester, NY, to take part in a weekend designed to help them reflect on how God might be calling them to serve. This discernment weekend offered a blend of prayer, conversation, and immersion in the Salesian spirit.

The retreat opened with a warm welcome and a talk from Fr. Sean McEwen, SDB, who spoke about Don Bosco’s legacy and invited participants to notice Christ in those around them. Saturday brought a unique opportunity to travel to Orange, NJ, for the diaconate ordination of now-Dcn. Tom Junis, SDB—a moment that left a deep impression on many. “Being there brought me peace and confidence in God’s plan,” one participant shared.

Back in Port Chester, attendees heard stories from former lay missioners who served in countries like Bolivia, Papua New Guinea, and Sierra Leone. These personal accounts gave a window into the joys and challenges of mission life. One attendee noted, “Their experiences helped me focus on what really matters—and reminded me that God often works through small, faithful steps.”

Beyond the scheduled talks, there was time for the candidates to share meals, pray together, and be present with others who also listen for God’s voice. The atmosphere of hospitality and encouragement allowed participants to slow down and consider where they are being led.

The weekend wrapped up with gratitude, prayer, and a renewed sense of purpose. Many left with open hearts, ready to keep discerning how they might serve the Church and the young in the spirit of Don Bosco.
