"The Green Corona Novitiate"

"The Green Corona Novitiate"

By Fr. John Puntino, SDB

In syntony with the Don Bosco Green Alliance and responding to the request of Fr. Maria Arokiam Kanaga’s call during his April 2019 extraordinary visitation that the community plant a tree as a sign that we are caring for creation, the novices planted not one, but two pear trees. They decided to plant two because the nursery representative suggested that cross-pollinated trees produce better fruit. Additionally, the one aged pear tree on the property may not survive many more seasons.

Salesian College Preparatory and the Salesian Community have taken Pope Francis’ call for education in environmental responsibility (Laudato Sì, 211) very seriously, and not just with this one act. Moreover, we are instituting a program of composting organic material and working to eliminate one-use plastic bottles.
