East Boston: Uniting Art and Faith

East Boston: Art at the Salesian Boys and Girls Club

By Bro. Bob Metell, SDB

(East Boston, MA – January 7) – Every month, based on the monthly theme, the Salesian Boys and Girls Club’s arts and craft instructor, Maria, and Bro. Bob Metell hold a drawing and coloring contest. The Club has great young artists of all ages. In November, the Club did a team Thanksgiving Wall mural project for the annual pasta dinner. On Fridays, Fr. Rich Putnam does faith time with the five-to-eight-year-olds, and the coloring project is part of the weekly lesson.

When I attended Boston College, for one month, the weekly special lectures featured artists and entertainers from around the Boston Metro area. The group of artists spoke about using art as a form of evangelization. One of the presenters spoke about art as a form of praise and worship. After the pandemic, Fr. Bill Bucciferro and I decided to add it to our faith orientation time.

On behalf of the Club’s members, staff, administrators, and Salesian community of East Boston, we wish you a healthy, happy, New Year filled with many blessings!
