(East Boston, MA – November 6) – November is upon us! With November, we set our thoughts on elections, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving. Looking back over the past year, we have so much to be thankful for, especially for the countless men and women in the armed forces, who have sacrificed much to serve their country, whether it be the U.S., Canada, or another nation.

October ended with a double Halloween celebration. On Wednesday, October 30, we celebrated our “Trunk or Treat” party with numerous parents, neighbors, staff, and board members decorating their cars for Halloween. A special thanks to the Boston police community service officers who decorated one of their police vans and handed out popcorn and candy. This is the fourth year we have offered the “Trunk or Treat” party, and it has become a neighborhood event. Fr. Jack, the director of the Salesian community in East Boston, with the assistance of Damian, my assistant, grilled hot dogs for the youngsters and our guests. Two of the main activities were the costume contest and pumpkin decorating contest.

On November 11, 1918, at 11:00 a.m., World War I ended. It was to be the “war to end all wars.” We have been at war ever since! Originally, the holiday was known as Armistice Day, which was established to celebrate the end of the war. Today, we honor the American veterans of all wars; many have made the ultimate sacrifice and given their lives so that others could be safe and live free. On Monday, November 11, let us set aside time to reflect on our freedom and the men and women who have defended it in the past. Additionally let us pray for those who are separated from their families and friends defending our freedom.

Stay tuned for future updates!
