East Boston: Club Holds Bake Sale and Car Wash

East Boston Car Wash

By Bro. Bob Metell, SDB

(East Boston, MA – August 6) – This week my kitchen was hopping with little bakers, as various groups of campers came in to bake cookies, cakes, and brownies for their bake sale and lemonade stand. Thanks to the week's 90-degree heat, cold lemonade was popular in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the outdoor bake sale had to move undercover due to the heavy rainstorms that rolled through on Thursday. Both the lemonade stand and bake sale were a great success.

The teens turned in their bowls and spatulas in exchange for sponges and buckets to use for their Friday afternoon car and delivery truck wash. The Club is located on the corner of Bennington Street, one of the major routes through East Boston, and Byron Street, a side street to the beach. It is a great spot for car washing. When I left work, the teens were tackling the vending machine delivery truck!

The angels group (the youngest group in camp) baked chocolate chip cookies and gave them to the local firefighters. The Boston Fire Department has three stations in East Boston with several types of apparatus stationed around the neighborhood. As with the local and state police, the Club has a special relationship with the local firefighters. Three summers ago, there was a fire on the roof of the Club; it was accidentally started by a construction worker. The firefighters were here in minutes and extinguished the fire before it could spread to the rest of the building. Many of the local firefighters, police officers, EMS, and park rangers attended either one of the Salesian schools or the Club.
