East Boston: Bulletin Boards and All Saints Day

East Boston: October 2025 News

By Bro. Bob Metell, SDB

(East Boston, Mass. – October 28) – October has been rapidly flying by, with Halloween and All Saints Day right around the corner. Additionally, the Salesian Boys and Girls Club of East Boston's annual neighborhood Trunk or Treat Halloween event is on Wednesday, October 29.

I have not designed and made a bulletin board in years. This year, I helped design and make two bulletin boards. Our talented art instructors, Maria and Ms. Joyce, provided guidance for both activities. Most of the artwork was made by our art club's talented members.

Last month, we worked on stewardship, environmental, and ecology themes. This month, our executive director, Mike, and marketing director, Anitia, wanted a board made on the following themes: “What do you like about the Club?” and “What do you like best about the Club?” The reasons “why” for the youngsters stem from being with friends, having fun, playing sports, engaging with the staff, making art and crafts, feeling safe, and playing with the turtles, to mention a few.

As we close October and greet November, we begin with honoring the saints and those who have gone before us. Both are reminders of what waits for us in paradise. My Northern Algonquin ancestors left the tradition and belief that our loved ones and friends are always with us as long as we keep them in our hearts, even though they have gone to their great reward. On All Saints Day, let us reflect on both present-day saints and those we've lost who continue to inspire us as heroes. My foster grandfather was my hero, growing up until he passed away when I was in ninth grade. But I often think of him, and when I am in a pinch, I still call upon him for wisdom and hope.
