Don Bosco Scholars: Accompanying and Empowering First-Generation College Students

Don Bosco Scholars

By Mr. Jerry Rodriguez, Executive Director, Don Bosco Community Center, Port Chester, NY

(Port Chester, NY – July 10) – On Wednesday, June 26, the Don Bosco Scholars Program celebrated the achievements of 15 outstanding students with a special Mass and luncheon in Port Chester.

Each scholar was awarded his or her first check of $500, which marked the beginning of the journey toward higher education. This unique program supports first-generation students from low-income families by providing a year-long mentorship focused on the college application process.

Our dedicated coaches assist students with every step, from selecting the right colleges to applying for financial aid and scholarships, ensuring they are well-prepared for their academic futures. As a result, most of our scholars are accepted to multiple colleges and receive substantial financial support, with 95 to 100 percent of their education costs covered.

Since its inception, the Don Bosco Scholars Program has helped 130 students, with 60 currently enrolled in college. To further support our scholars, each one receives a $1,000 scholarship to assist with school-related expenses for four years. This initiative aligns with Don Bosco's mission to not only feed the heart but also the mind, which paves the way for future leaders and empowers them to achieve their educational dreams and create brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
